Kathryn Dykstra

Kathryn Ann Dykstra, 60, of Spearfish died peacefully at home on Saturday, June 9, 2012 from Parkinson’s disease.

Kathy was born June 15, 1951 in Grand Junction, Colorado to the late Page and Edith Townley. She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1969, where she was an active member of the Cobbler Co-Eds. Kathy attended Cottey College from 1969-1971, receiving an Associate of Arts degree. She went on to study at the University of Oregon and completed her Bachelors of Science Degree in Sociology and Education at BHSU in 1977. She obtained her Certified Nutritionist degree from the National Institute of Nutritional Education in 1988.

In 1978, Kathy was married to Ed Dykstra. The same year, her passion for health and nutrition led her to open Good Earth Natural Foods with the late Betty Junek. Kathy managed Good Earth until 2005, providing personal nutritional help to many people over the years. Her natural warmth and compassion turned Good Earth into more than just a business, fostering a strong community where Kathy forged many friendships.

Kathy loved the Black Hills. From weekends at Pactola Lake with her high school friends to cross country skiing at Big Hill with her family, she always enjoyed being outdoors. She was also an active community member, involved in several organizations including the Black Hills Swim Team and the Downtown Business Association.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Ed Dykstra and their two children, Clay (Anna) Dykstra and Page Dykstra, all of Spearfish. She is also survived by her brother, Jud Townley of Rapid City and sister, Kim Townley of Lexington, KY.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2012 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish. Family members will be present at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until service time to greet and visit with friends. In lieu of flowers, please give a donation to your favorite charity in Kathy’s memory.
